Tatami

A book about rooms measured in mats

Tatami

Tatami rooms are measured not in square metres but in mats — a unit that is also a proportion, a posture, and a social code. The book traces that idea through 240 pages of essays, plans and photography.

Approach

The grid is built on the 2:1 proportion of the mat itself. Two paper stocks separate essay from image; the binding opens flat so floor plans read across the gutter without loss.

Outcome

Shortlisted for the Schönste Bücher award; second printing within six months.
